What DOES ADR STAND FOR IN FILM?

Automated dialogue replacement (ADR) is the process of re-recording dialogue in a film or video after shooting. In ADR, the actor has to match the lip movements of the original performance as closely as possible. The director will give instructions to the actor on how to match their lip movements based on what they see in front of them. The primary goal of ADR is to fix any errors that were made during filming and make sure that all dialogue is audible and understandable. It also helps actors who are uncomfortable with their lines or need help remembering them.

In order to make ADR possible, filmmakers record their actors' dialogue in a sound booth before filming. One of the benefits of having ADR done is that the actors can watch the footage and see how much they need to change their performance.Another benefit of adr is that it saves time in post-production because they do not have to worry about re-shooting everything. This also makes it easier for directors and producers as it allows them to cut scenes into shorter, more focused episodes.

Administrative Notes:

  • We do NOT provide “record and replace”. SC is running on a separate computer.

  • Channel one is the audio feed from the control room and channel two is the LTC feed from ProTools

  • EdiPrompt also announces the name of each record take and you will also see a take number on your screen.

  • Beeps can be sent down the audio side along with our audio (if requested)

  • We have found that a 3 second pre-roll on our end is usually sufficient for lockup. If you need more, we can adjust.

  • We can either generate the ZOOM session on our end or the client can.

  • We have 2 instances of ZOOM running; one is the video feed from the booth and the second feed is the picture.
